Magnolia Institute provides a child-led, hands-on, nature-based education hybrid model. Children spend half of their day in a traditional Montessori outdoors classroom and the other half of their day in the great outdoors guided by Maria Montessori’s philosophy and the Forest School movement.

Located on Peavine Road in Cumberland County, on 9 acres of field and forest, Magnolia Institute is a Montessori Farm and Forest hybrid school for children ages 2.5-6.

  • Magnolia Children's House

In our outdoor Montessori classroom, children make good, and often outstanding, progress towards the early learning goals, particularly in their personal, social and emotional development and in their knowledge and understanding of the world. Excellent guidance from the staff, combined with a very inviting learning environment, helps them to become confident and competent self-learners.

  • Magnolia Forest

Our Forest class is rooted in play-based learning.  The children are free to explore and experiment in nature. In this way, the focus is on cultivating and growing the process of learning, not on content. While children are discovering nature they will be encouraged to assimilate new information and problem solve through divergent thinking. The perfect way to end the day.

  • Maggie's Farm

Our wild flower fields, wet weather stream, and our lasagna beds are just the beginning for Maggie's Farm. Guiding children to care for others and the Earth through sustainability, regenerative farming, and permaculture techniques. We encourage excellence through responsibility, self-esteem, and self-reliance. Maggie's Farm is the home Sol Seeds, our After School Program.

Nature is all around us, from a tiny sidewalk crack to a gorgeous mountain pass to the vast ocean to even our own backyard or balcony.  Spending time outdoors is an essential to life. It can reduce stress, boost concentration, inspire hope and create community. It is also the best way to inspire a child's learning and growth.

--Dr. Jean Lomino, Founder of Forest SchoolTeacher Institute

Be kind to Nature. Be kind to Others. Be kind to Ourselves.

In the classroom the work is important. In the forest the play is important. In all areas of life, unavoidable risks in allowing a child freedom, exploration, independence...but I ask you, isn't the real risk the child not doing the necessary work and play? The risk of not developing confidence from struggle? Glory out of strife? Success after failure?

We must clearly understand that when we give the child freedom and independence, we are giving freedom to a worker already braced for action, who cannot live without working and being active.”

-Dr. Maria Montessori
